Janelle and Scotty Gould

Putting a face: to the name

Blogging is about more than just writing. It’s about people – and this week I got to meet a fellow blogger whose musings I follow and who follows me back.

What’s more, she’d travelled nearly 17,000km for the privilege.

I say that, but, obviously, Janelle and her husband, Scotty, hadn’t made the journey from Melbourne just to meet me and my partner, Damon. They were on a nine-week holiday here in France.

Yes, you read that right, a nine-week holiday.

So far, their trip has taken in Nice, Grasse, Rouen and, now, Lille – a veritable tour de France.

Janelle runs the Distant Francophile website and blog. I’ve borrowed one of my favourite images of her and Scotty from her site for this post. (Hope you don’t mind, Janelle!)

She began blogging around the same time as I did – I’ve been doing this for six years now. We’ve followed each other from those early days.

So, I felt I knew her already anyway.

Then, recently, she interviewed me for her Franco-Files series, which we did via Skype. For that, I talked about how I came to love France, favourite places, tips for language learners…

When I read that she was due to be in France this autumn, I suggested getting together. So, she and her charming husband Scotty came to Lille on Saturday.

“Perhaps unsurprisingly, we found we had loads in common and our meal was over in what seemed like no time”

We spent a long lunch getting to know each other properly.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, we found we had loads in common and our meal was over in what seemed like no time – though we’d become the only guests in the restaurant long before dessert came.

By the end, I felt we’d made two new friends.

They headed back to Rouen before continuing on their travels to Paris this week. I was sad to see them go.

Ah well, Janelle and Scotty, here’s to the next time!

  6. It’s great to connect with other bloggers. I’ve also met quite a few of my readers who aren’t bloggers during my 10 years of blogging – some from as far as Australia, Canada and S Africa, who are visiting France. There are many others who I feel are friends, even though we’ve never met.

  7. What a wonderful surprise to read your blog this morning! I have been following Janelle for several years and have just found you in late 2018. I am so glad to hear that you were able to meet f2f. Have enjoyed following along on your journey and learning about the repercussions of Brexit and how this affects your choice of living in France. The best to you both!! from western Canada.
